Lake Alta, situated above the Remarkables Ski field.
Whilst visiting friends in Arrowtown and shooting Warbirds over Wanaka we decided to hike up to Lake Alta. Its a small lake tucked away near the top of the Remarkables, a huge and imposing rugged mountain range dominating the Queenstown skyline.
The walk is a fairly easy one as they go, the trail isnt clearly marked at the start but its reasonably obvious where to head , not too steep or long, the drive up the ski field access road (gravel) may scare some people though. Luckily there was no snow on the ground to make it tricky, a few weeks later there was plenty.
As I was shooting warbirds I’d brought along a fair bit of photo gear so had the 10-20 and 17-55 with me for the walk along with a handful of filters, the circular polariser really helped out with the reflections and colour of the lake.
Lake Alta itself is spectacular, very colourful and rugged, we spend some considerable time walking round and taking photos, the cloud was quite unhelpful , I had the briefest of chances to get this shot (a 2 shot pano) where the cloud obscured very little of the mountain. The lake shot with a circular polariser realy showing off its dramatic colours.
I’m planning a return trip closer to winter to try and get some snow in the shot and hopefully see the peak too.
